A.I. Godfather Warns the World

Geoffrey Hinton left Google to warn the world about AI dangers like fake news and autonomous weapons. He believes that AI can have emotions like frustration and anger, but not physical pain. This idea is unpopular among some experts, but Hinton thinks AI systems could communicate emotions like humans do. He didn't talk about this earlier because his first warning about AI threats was met with resistance. It's hard to prove if AI truly feels emotions as humans do, as they may only reflect probable emotions they learned through training. The question of AI's consciousness and emotions remains a mystery without a scientific way to measure it.

Do A.I. News Anchors Do a Better Job Than Humans?

Traditional TV news anchors are familiar faces we see every day, but AI is starting to take over some jobs, including news reading. In India, there are AI-generated news anchors like Lisa and Sana. They have monotone voices and unnatural facial expressions, which can feel weird to watch. However, they are always available and don't get sick or tired. Some people support using AI for faster news and language diversity, but others worry it might replace human jobs and lack human emotions. There are also ethical concerns about AI bots looking like their creators, leading to discrimination against certain groups. The debate continues on how AI should be used in the news industry.

Spotify Wants More A.I. Content and Less Humans

Spotify's CEO, Daniel Ek, talked about how they plan to use AI to make the music streaming service better. They want to use AI to create personalized experiences, summarize podcasts so it's easier to find new ones, and make AI-generated ads that are more efficient and cost-effective for advertisers. They are also working on a patent for an AI-powered system that can turn text into human-like speech with emotions and accents. Spotify is investing in AI voice technology and has acquired a startup to help with this. Despite a recent price hike, Spotify's earnings are still growing, and they have millions of users worldwide.

Micron’s Big A.I. Swing

Micron Technology has developed a new type of memory called HBM3 Gen2. This memory is faster and more power-efficient than previous versions. It can be used in AI data centers to improve the performance of large language models like GPT-4. The new memory allows AI models to be trained faster and at a lower cost. Micron has worked with other companies like TSMC and NVIDIA to create this technology. The new memory is expected to be available in the market soon.
