BIG TECH

Sora vs YouTube

OpenAI's CTO Mira Murati didn't confirm whether their video generator, Sora, was trained using YouTube videos. This led to YouTube CEO Neal Mohan expressing potential issues with OpenAI, highlighting that using YouTube's content without permission violates their terms of service. However, both parties remained vague about Sora's data sources.

It's worth noting the irony here, as Google (YouTube's parent company) has been known to train its AI models with data from various sources. This situation raises questions about fairness and the rules of using digital content for AI training, especially when companies like Google also rely on external data for their advancements.

HEALTHCARE

FDA Authorizes AI Sepsis Prediction, Detection Tool

The FDA recently authorized Prenosis, Inc.'s Sepsis ImmunoScore, a groundbreaking AI/ML-based software designed to identify patients at risk of developing or currently having sepsis—a condition that affects at least 1.7 million adults in the U.S. annually, resulting in nearly 270,000 deaths. Highlighting the severity of sepsis, Jeff Shuren from the FDA emphasized the importance of innovative technologies like this for patient benefit.

The Sepsis ImmunoScore functions by analyzing data from a patient's electronic health record, laboratory findings, and clinical assessments to assess the risk of sepsis within 24 hours of a patient's admission to the emergency department or hospital, under specific criteria. This tool is a significant step forward but is advised not to be the sole indicator for diagnosing sepsis, ensuring a balanced approach to medical decision-making.

No Login Required for ChatGTP

OpenAI has announced that users will no longer need an account to access ChatGPT marking a significant change from its previous policy where users were required to sign up to use the chatbot since its launch in late 2022. This move aims to make AI more accessible and comes amidst ChatGPT's massive popularity, with over 100 million weekly users across 185 countries.

Access to other OpenAI products, such as DALL-E 3, the AI voice cloning service Voice Engine, and the video creation platform Sora, will still require an account and payment.

BIG TECH

AI's Impact on the Technology Workforce

A McKinsey survey found that 25% of business professionals fear AI will lead to layoffs, a concern supported by an estimate of 4,000 job losses to AI since May. Despite nearly half of managers expressing interest in replacing workers with AI, the AI-Enabled ICT Workforce Consortium, led by Cisco and supported by tech giants like Google and IBM, aims to counteract job loss fears by focusing on re-skilling and up-skilling within the ICT industry.

The consortium plans to assess the impact of AI on 56 key ICT roles and provide training recommendations, targeting roles that make up a significant portion of job postings in the U.S. and five major European countries. While the consortium's intentions are to mitigate AI-related job displacement, the effectiveness of their efforts and the actual availability of AI roles remain to be seen.
