Reddit vs AI companies

Reddit is negotiating with top AI companies for payment for its data. To strengthen its negotiating position, Reddit is considering blocking search crawlers like Google and Bing, a move that could drastically reduce its site traffic but is deemed a worthy trade-off. While this action might seem radical, the rapid rise of generative AI technologies has forced companies to reevaluate how they can benefit financially from these advancements, with Reddit leading the charge.

The company's aggressive moves come amid plans for a potential IPO and its ongoing efforts to diversify its revenue streams. Reddit's CEO, Steve Huffman, emphasized the value of Reddit's ever-evolving data to large language models and expressed concern over AI companies benefiting from Reddit's data without returning any value to its users.

The Humane AI Pin runs GPT-4

Humane's AI Pin, set to launch on November 9th, has been named one of Time Magazineā€™s ā€œBest Inventions of 2023.ā€ The device, which attaches magnetically to clothing, is powered by a combination of proprietary software and OpenAIā€™s GPT-4, enabling features like making calls, translating speech, and understanding nutritional information.

The AI Pin has been in the spotlight since its introduction in a TED talk by co-founder Imran Chaudhri, a former Apple employee. The device has been showcased at events like Paris Fashion Week and has been positioned by Humane as a revolutionary wearable.

Not sure if we are buying Chaudhri calling the device ā€œa new kind of wearable device and platformā€ when it looks like an Apple watch without the band and uses GPT-4. Reminds us of the GPT wrapper / Scooby Doo meme.

OpenAI facing price pressure from Microsoft

OpenAI, once a dominant player in the generative artificial intelligence sector, is now grappling with increasing competition, especially when it comes to corporate sales. Initially, OpenAI's ChatGPT model garnered significant attention and adoption, but a shift is evident. Large enterprises, such as Salesforce and Wix, are now exploring or adopting more cost-effective AI solutions. Instead of purchasing directly from OpenAI, some are opting to buy OpenAIā€™s software through Microsoft's Azure platform. This shift poses a challenge for OpenAI, as Microsoft, in such arrangements, retains a considerable share of the revenue, reducing OpenAI's direct earnings.

The market for large language models, or LLMs, is witnessing rapid changes. Tech behemoths like Google and Amazon Web Services are stepping in with their own offerings, increasing the choices available for businesses. Furthermore, there's a rising trend among companies to adapt open-source AI software, such as Mistral-7B-Instruct, to meet their needs, thereby bypassing the need to invest in expensive proprietary models like those offered by OpenAI. Many developers have found these models to be sufficient for simpler tasks.

ā€œNightshadeā€ tool prevents AI image training

Nightshade, a new tool designed to protect artists' rights, allows creators to subtly alter the pixels in their art, rendering them "poisoned" to AI training sets. If AI companies use these altered images without permission, the AI models they train can malfunction, leading to unpredictable and chaotic outputs.

Developed in response to concerns about AI firms using artists' work without consent, Nightshade aims to deter these companies from disregarding copyright laws. When such "poisoned" images are incorporated into training datasets, they can cause AI models, like DALL-E or Stable Diffusion, to produce erroneous results, such as turning images of dogs into cats.
