What Is ‘Cerebral Valley’?

San Francisco has its own version of Silicon Valley, known as "Cerebral Valley," situated in Hayes Valley. This area is home to many AI communities and hacker houses, which are similar to the start-up homes in Palo Alto that produced major tech companies like Facebook. As the generative technology industry grows in the Bay Area, these hacker communities are becoming more than just a part of tech's lifestyle. They're now considered the places where the future of AI is being shaped.

Interestingly, a conference called the Cerebral Valley AI Summit is scheduled to occur on March 30, 2023. Some big names will be panelist like CEO of Stability.ai Emad Mostaque, CEO of Runway ML, CEO Quora/Poe, Founder of Langchain and many other AI first projects and companies.

Poe Chatbot = Access ChatGPT Plus and More

Poe is an AI chatbot by Quora.com and is powered by ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, Sage, and Dragonfly. All four of these are general knowledge chatbots but in the future Poe will most likely add more topic specific chatbots. I’m thinking maybe a medical/healthcare focused chatbot or a math chatbot, etc. Poe is available via desktop iOS and Android. See Poe.com to sign up and download mobile versions.

You can use Poe for free, and it's a fantastic way to access other chatbots. Poe has a sleeker interface than going through ChatGPT directly. One neat feature of Poe is that you can compare answers from different chatbots and see which one fits your needs best.

What are the differences between the bots? — At present, Claude tends to be better at many creative writing tasks and it is more likely to refuse to answer questions. Sage tends to be better at languages other than English, and is better at programming-related tasks. Dragonfly tends to have shorter responses, and it can be easier to get Dragonfly to follow instructions when given examples in the input. Each bot has a distinct personality that you can get to know over time, so if you’re interested, you can try them all and decide which you like best for yourself.

Facebook's Large Language Model LLaMa Leaks

If you've ever talked to ChatGPT, then you've used a large language model (LLM) called GPT-3 from OpenAI. It learned a lot by reading stuff on the Internet, like Wikipedia and online books. LLMs are important because they are needed for AI-powered chatbots. Graphic below shows the top 10 data sources for GPT-3.

Big companies, like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and China's Baidu, have access to LLMs. They got this technology by working on their own or by teaming up with other companies. To keep up with the competition Meta is jumping into the AI race with their own LLM called LLaMA. More details here.

The most recent news is that LLaMA weights have been leaked and are now available on torrents. It's like the source code of an operating system or a massive app such as Microsoft Word being leaked. This leak means that third-party hackers developers can now utilize the weights to create their custom chatbots, similar to ChatGPT.

OpenAI AGI Roadmap - Should We Be Worried?

AGI stands for "Artificial General Intelligence." It would be like a computer that could do anything a person can do, like solving problems, understanding language, and making decisions. We don't have this kind of technology yet, but a lot of companies, like OpenAI, are trying to make it! Quick summary below read the full blog post here.

OpenAI has made a plan called an AGI roadmap. This plan explains what they will do in the short and long term, and how they will make sure it's safe for everyone. OpenAI thinks that making super intelligence is important, but it could also be scary. They think it's important for everyone to work together to make it successful.

What is ControlNET?

You've probably heard the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words". ControlNET is a tool that works based on this idea. By using an image as part of the prompt, the text-to-image output can closely match the user's instructions.

To see how this works, check out the "Scribble" implementation. It takes a user's rough sketch, such as a lightning bolt striking a tree in my test case, and creates an image based on that plus the prompt. It's pretty cool, right? You can try it out yourself on this website and test your scribbling plus prompt skills!

ControlNET has many other image-to-image + prompt implementation methods with names like Canny, Hough, HED, Scribble, Scribble Interactive, Fake Scribble, Pose, Segmentation, Depth, and Normal map. If you want to learn more about them, you can nerd out and read the research paper here.

Text-to-Image With Position Control

While image-to-image tools like ControlNet are impressive, they have limitations. To improve these tools, a new approach called GLIGEN (Grounded-Language-to-Image Generation) was introduced. GLIGEN allows for more information about where objects should be placed in the picture to be used, resulting in better image generation. GLIGEN can create new pictures based on captions and other information about where things should go, and it performs well even when generating images it hasn't seen before. Read the paper here and try a demo here.

Cool A.I. Tools and News

The world of AI and machine learning is moving incredibly fast, and it's tough to keep up with all the cool new developments! Here are some of the most exciting AI-powered tools and news.

You know what they say, "overnight success" can take up to 10 years of hard work! Here's a video featuring OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, chatting about his previous company, Loopt. Unfortunately, things didn't go as planned, and it didn't really take off. Check it out!

A Meme of the Day

You ever hear of the "mullet ratio"? It's when your hair is way shorter in the front than it is in the back, and it's usually around a 1:1 ratio. This hairstyle is called a mullet, and it was all the rage back in the 80s and 90s. Now you're in the loop, my friend!

This week, the Internet was going nuts over a tweet featuring younger versions of all the US Presidents sporting mullets. It was all thanks to an AI that created these images! Check out the tweet below.
