LEGAL
OpenAI sued again for scraping news websites

Digital news outlets The Intercept, Raw Story, and AlterNet have initiated a copyright infringement lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging unauthorized use of their journalism to train the AI's chatbots. These outlets claim that thousands of their articles were used without permission, compensation, or acknowledgment, thereby leveraging their journalistic efforts for the AI's learning and responses.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Southern District of New York, highlights the reliance of ChatGPT on copyrighted journalistic content to mimic intelligence, seeking damages of at least $2,500 for each unauthorized use of their stories. Additionally, The Intercept has named Microsoft as a defendant, citing its significant investment in OpenAI, though Raw Story and AlterNet refrained due to existing partnerships with the tech giant.

0-60 MPH in 1 second

Despite delays, Tesla aims to complete the Roadster's design by this year's end, with shipping starting in 2025. Notably, the Roadster, contrary to its traditional definition, features four seats and a removable glass roof.

Originally boasting a 620-mile range and a top speed over 250 mph, the new Roadster's specs have escalated, including a collaboration with SpaceX to enhance its performance with rocket thrusters, potentially enabling it to fly. Reservation for the Roadster, starting at $200,000, with the Founder Series at $250,000, is now open on Tesla's website.

BIG TECH

Apple and Gen AI in 2024

At Apple's annual shareholders meeting, CEO Tim Cook announced Apple's commitment to making significant advancements in Generative AI (GenAI) this year, marking a strategic pivot amidst the tech giant's reported cancellation of its ambitious electric vehicle project, reallocating some staff towards GenAI efforts.

Historically, Apple has been cautious in its approach to GenAI, focusing on internal applications while slowly exploring consumer-facing technologies. This includes enhancing autocorrect and text prediction in iOS, and reports from Bloomberg suggest plans to upgrade Siri and Spotlight with GenAI capabilities for complex queries and conversations.

GOVERNMENT

US SEC to investigate Sam Altman

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is conducting an investigation into OpenAI, focusing on whether investors were misled during a contentious leadership debate last year, particularly regarding the actions and internal communications of CEO Sam Altman. Altman was ousted in November but later reinstated under specific conditions after agreeing to an internal investigation.

The SEC's interest was sparked by allegations of Altman not being fully candid, alongside revelations of internal tensions regarding his fundraising activities and a dispute with a former board member.
