BIG TECH

OpenAI and Microsoft tension

OpenAI and Microsoft are experiencing a shift in their partnership following OpenAI's recent capital raise of $6.6 billion. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and CFO Sarah Friar expressed dissatisfaction with Microsoft's speed in supplying necessary server resources, prompting OpenAI to explore alternative data center deals, including a significant agreement with Oracle to develop one of the world's largest AI data centers in Texas.

This evolving dynamic reflects OpenAI's desire to reduce its reliance on Microsoft amidst growing competition from other AI firms. Additionally, while Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI, securing substantial rights to its profits, concerns over the cost-effectiveness of data centers have led Microsoft to become more cautious in its financial commitments.

POLITICS

AI chatbot as debate stand-in

In a creative attempt to engage voters ahead of the upcoming election, Bentley Hensel, an independent congressional challenger in Virginia, has developed an AI chatbot named DonBot to represent Democratic incumbent Don Beyer, who has declined to participate in additional debates. Hensel, frustrated by Beyer's absence, trained DonBot using publicly available information about Beyer to answer policy questions during a debate scheduled for October 17, alongside fellow independent David Kennedy.

While Beyer has a significant fundraising advantage and is expected to win in the heavily Democratic district, Hensel aims to bring attention to the campaign and promote transparency. Legal experts suggest that Beyer would likely struggle to prevent the debate as long as it is clear that the AI is not intended to mislead voters.
