OpenAI’s Strawberry model arriving in two weeks

OpenAI's reasoning-focused AI model, "Strawberry," is set to launch within the next two weeks as part of ChatGPT, ahead of its original fall release. Strawberry is unique in that it takes time to "think" before responding, offering more thoughtful and detailed answers compared to OpenAI's previous models, but it is initially limited to text-only output.

The model is designed to handle complex, multi-step queries more effectively, making it ideal for tasks such as coding, math, and subjective business needs. OpenAI is also considering different pricing options for Strawberry, including rate limits and higher-priced tiers. The release comes as OpenAI faces increased competition from other tech giants like Google, which have also been advancing AI-powered features in their products.

GOVERNMENT

Mandatory reporting proposed for frontier AI

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) has proposed a new mandatory reporting requirement for leading AI developers and cloud providers. The rule mandates that developers of advanced AI models and computing clusters report on developmental activities, cybersecurity measures, and red-teaming efforts aimed at testing potential risks, such as cyberattacks or the misuse of AI for developing weapons of mass destruction.

This initiative is designed to enhance national security and safeguard U.S. technological leadership by ensuring that AI advancements are safe, secure, and resistant to misuse by foreign adversaries or non-state actors. The proposed rule follows a pilot survey and aims to monitor the dual-use nature of AI while fostering innovation.

FROM OUR PARTNERS

AI that manages your inbox like a human

Do you want to be good at email, or do you want to be good at your job? That’s what we asked ourselves before we built Superfilter, a YC-backed AI assistant that manages your email like an executive assistant.

We decided we’d rather be good at our jobs (or spend time not working at all) – so we built AI that helps you stay on top of important emails, keeps your inbox organized and handles repetitive tasks like meeting coordination and much more.

Superfilter pairs with your existing email client, and learns from your habits to organize your inbox effortlessly. Once trained, it starts taking things off your plate, so you can focus on what truly matters.

Save one hour a day by handing inbox management to your Superfilter assistant.

DOJ claims Google has “trifecta of monopolies”

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has begun its latest monopoly trial against Google, this time targeting the company's dominance in the ad tech industry. The DOJ alleges that Google has used anti-competitive practices to seize control of ad tools, allowing it to take a significant cut of ad revenue and harming both advertisers and publishers.

Google defends its position by arguing that its products are chosen for their quality and that breaking up its ad tech business could harm small businesses. The trial is expected to last several weeks, and any remedies could take years to implement, with the potential for Google to face further litigation if it loses.

Time AI 100 list

The 2024 TIME100 AI list highlights the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, bringing together influential leaders like Google CEO Sundar Pichai and privacy advocate Meredith Whittaker. While Pichai emphasizes AI as one of Google's most significant advancements in 20 years, Whittaker raises concerns about the concentration of AI power in a few major tech companies.

This year's list includes 91 new additions, reflecting the field's fast-paced changes, and features a diverse range of innovators, from a 15-year-old deepfake protection advocate to a prominent Chinese computer scientist. The AI sector has seen dramatic events, such as OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman's firing and return, sparking industry-wide debates on safety and development speed. The growing influence of tech giants funding AI startups is shaping the future of AI, as seen through real-world applications like healthcare innovations.
