BIG TECH

Copilot+ PCs

Microsoft is making a significant move to integrate AI into laptops with its new "Copilot Plus PCs" branding. These laptops will feature built-in AI hardware and support for AI features across Windows 11. Major laptop brands like Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, HP, Acer, and Asus will offer these models, along with Microsoft’s own Surface line. Both Intel and AMD chip laptops will support these AI features.

The AI capabilities will be enabled by a neural processor, powering features like "Recall," which creates a searchable memory of your activities. Copilot Plus PCs will require at least 16GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD storage, and an NPU. These laptops will also support OpenAI’s GPT-4o model. Microsoft claims these new laptops will be faster than a MacBook Air with an M3 processor and have all-day battery life. The first Copilot Plus PCs, featuring Qualcomm processors, will launch on June 18th, with Intel and AMD models to follow.

OpenAI says Sky voice paused

OpenAI is pausing the use of one of its ChatGPT voices, Sky, after users said it sounded like Scarlett Johansson from the movie "Her." OpenAI clarified that Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Johansson but comes from a different actress. The company decided to pause Sky’s use while addressing questions about how it selects its voice options.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, hinted at the connection to "Her" by posting the word "her" on social media. This development has sparked discussions about gendered interactions with AI, similar to past criticisms of female-voiced assistants like Siri and Alexa.

BIG TECH

Apple iOS 18 + ChatGPT

Although Apple introduced Siri in 2011, it has not kept pace with rapid AI advancements. To address this, Apple will roll out new generative AI features at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10, including enhancements to Siri for better conversational abilities and day-to-day task assistance. Additionally, Apple is shifting from its device-based processing to integrating cloud-based AI services, using high-end Mac chips in its data centers.

A key part of this strategy involves partnering with OpenAI to integrate its technology into iOS 18, aiming to bring advanced AI features to users. Apple is also considering developing its own search engine with privacy features, though this would be costly and impact its lucrative deal with Google.

ChatGPT + Google Drive or OneDrive

OpenAI announced that ChatGPT will soon allow users to analyze files directly from Google Drive or OneDrive without needing to download them first. This feature, rolling out to paying ChatGPT users over the next few weeks, will make it easier for ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, and Teams users to access and analyze Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Google files.

The improved data analytics features, available through GPT-4o, also enhance ChatGPT’s ability to understand datasets, run Python codes, and create interactive charts. OpenAI assures that data from ChatGPT Enterprise and Teams users will not be used to train AI models, and ChatGPT Plus subscribers can opt out of data training.
