Lawyer GPT
The British AI firm Luminance has made a significant leap in legal technology by developing a system that allows artificial intelligence to autonomously negotiate contracts without human input. The technology used AI to negotiate a non-disclosure agreement in minutes, reflecting the significant efficiency gains the software promises.
Their new AI, built on a proprietary large language model, is designed to streamline the cumbersome paperwork that lawyers face daily. Luminance, founded by University of Cambridge mathematicians, is positioned as a tool to enhance the productivity of legal professionals by processing complex legal documentation through its AI and machine-learning platform.
Meta and political ads use of AI
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced a new policy requiring political ads on their platforms to disclose the use of artificial intelligence, particularly for ads that feature realistic images of people or events altered with AI. This rule, effective January 1, 2024 and to be implemented globally, aims to address the risks associated with lifelike AI-generated content, which could mislead voters. In a similar vein, Microsoft revealed its own election initiatives, such as a digital watermark for campaign ads to verify authenticity and prevent digital alterations.
Meta's move comes amid growing concerns over the spread of disinformation through sophisticated AI technologies like deepfakes. This step is part of broader efforts, including those by the Federal Election Commission and President Joe Biden's administration, to promote the responsible development of AI and safeguard against deceptive content as the 2024 election approaches.

Oregon Department of Education and AI
Oregon is among only two states that have issued official policy guidance for schools on the use of AI platforms like ChatGPT. Oregon's approach, the state's educators have released a report discussing both the potential risks and benefits of generative AI in classrooms. The report by the Oregon Department of Education covers potential uses of AI in school operations, including scheduling and lesson planning, and advises on dealing with issues like plagiarism.
Oregon's current stance is that while AI alone won't revolutionize education, it should be used within a comprehensive educational technology framework that prioritizes relationships, mental health, pedagogy, and quality instructional materials.
