Google's New Medical AI

Israel reluctant to share A.I. weapons information and Google develops A.I. for medical diagnoses.

Lionel Messi recently signed with Inter Miami for somewhere between $50-$60 million dollars. I’ll never be a professional soccer player, but maybe I can raise that much money for my GPT-3 wrapper. One day…

Investors Pour $56M Into Hammerspace

Hammerspace, a startup focused on data management, has secured $56 million in funding led by Prosperity7 Ventures. The company, founded by technologist David Flynn, helps organizations access and utilize large amounts of data efficiently. Their customers include Blue Origin, the National Science Foundation, and major media groups for special effects development.

Hammerspace specializes in managing unstructured data across various locations and provides a high-speed data pipeline for AI models. The startup's unique file system, based on Linux, sets them apart in the industry. With the increasing decentralization of data, investors are interested in Hammerspace's potential to unlock value.

Potential A.I. Killing Machines in Israel

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have integrated AI into their operations, using it for target selection and logistics. AI recommendation systems identify targets, while AI models like Fire Factory organize air raids. Human oversight exists, but there is a lack of regulation. Supporters see AI as enhancing capabilities and reducing casualties, while critics highlight risks and accountability.

The IDF has used AI in conflicts in the Gaza Strip, identifying launchpads and deploying drones. With tensions rising with Iran, AI tools like Fire Factory are designed for potential multi-front conflicts. Israel aims to lead in autonomous weaponry, expanding AI use across units for data interpretation.

How A.I. can help identify places for launchpads and deploying drones.

The development of AI tools raises concerns about fully autonomous killing machines and transparency. Israel claims human oversight, but critics fear AI outpacing research. Many algorithms are proprietary, and transparency is acknowledged as necessary. AI is not integrated into recruitment software due to discrimination concerns. While AI can reduce civilian casualties, ethical concerns and risks persist.

Details of Israel's AI investments and defense contracts are undisclosed. AI system development by governments and defense companies is secretive. No international framework addresses responsibility for AI-related civilian casualties. Concerns exist about testing, training data, and accuracy. Some argue AI should be limited to defense, prioritizing human decision-making and international law.

Legacy Media 🤝 OpenAI

The Associated Press (AP) has reached a two-year agreement with OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, to share access to select news content and technology. This marks one of the first official news-sharing agreements between a major U.S. news company and an AI firm. As part of the deal, OpenAI will license a portion of the AP's text archive dating back to 1985 to train its AI algorithms, while the AP will gain access to OpenAI's technology and product expertise. The technical details of the sharing arrangement are still being worked out. The AP aims to develop standards and best practices for generative AI in news by partnering with OpenAI, ensuring protection of intellectual property and fair compensation for content creators. The AP is also open to similar agreements with other AI companies.

Mastercard’s A.I. Stops Fraud Before it Happens

Mastercard has introduced its "Consumer Fraud Risk" solution powered by advanced AI to combat impersonation fraud and protect customers' funds. The technology analyzes real-time account-to-account transfers, utilizing data from nine major UK banks to proactively identify and prevent fraudulent payments. By scrutinizing various factors, such as transaction activity, account names, payment values, and histories, the AI system enables banks to intervene and halt fraudulent payments before funds are lost.

It is estimated that over $130 million could be saved annually in scam payments. Mastercard plans to expand the solution to international markets, aiming to provide cutting-edge AI tools that enhance fraud detection capabilities worldwide.

Google Develops an A.I. for Better Medical Diagnoses

Diagram illustrating how CoDoC is trained.

Google has developed an artificial intelligence system called CoDoC that can determine when to trust AI-based medical diagnoses and when to seek a second opinion from a human doctor. The system aims to improve the efficiency of analyzing medical scan data while maintaining accuracy.

It helps predictive AI recognize its limitations and avoid providing unreliable answers. CoDoC works alongside existing AI systems used to interpret medical imagery such as chest X-rays or mammograms. In a theoretical test, CoDoC reduced false positive interpretations of mammograms by 25%. However, the system has not yet been tested in a real clinical environment.
