Germany Considers Following Italy In Banning ChatGPT
ChatGPT was trained on a blend of sources including websites, PDF books, scholarly articles, the vast knowledge repository of Wikipedia, and various other materials. Although the exact makeup of the data used for training remains a mystery, researchers have been able to piece together this fascinating mosaic of information.
Data Used To Train GPT-3
In the US, people might not give much thought to how their personal data is being used and stored, but across the pond in Europe, they take it pretty seriously. In fact, they have a whole set of rules called GDPR that governs this stuff. And believe it or not, those pesky cookie pop-ups you see on websites are actually a result of GDPR!
Unfortunately, not everyone is a fan of ChatGPT, and some countries are even considering banning it. Italy has already done so, and now Germany is weighing their options. It's a bummer for sure, but we'll have to wait and see how it all plays out.
In the meantime, if you're curious about GDPR and what it entails, check out the info below. And if you want to dive deeper, we've included a link to an article here.
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the toughest privacy and security law in the world. Though it was drafted and passed by the European Union (EU), it imposes obligations onto organizations anywhere, so long as they target or collect data related to people in the EU. The regulation was put into effect on May 25, 2018. The GDPR will levy harsh fines against those who violate its privacy and security standards, with penalties reaching into the tens of millions of euros.
Joe Biden Urges Tech Firms to Address Risks of AI
On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden expressed concern about the safety of artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing that technology companies should prioritize ensuring their products are secure before releasing them to the public. While acknowledging the potential benefits of AI in tackling issues like disease and climate change, he also stressed the importance of addressing potential risks to society, national security, and the economy.
In a meeting with science and technology advisers, President Biden emphasized that tech companies should prioritize ensuring the security of their AI products before making them available to the public. When asked about the potential risks associated with AI, he acknowledged that it's still uncertain and there's a possibility of risks that need to be addressed.
While there are many articles about President Biden's comments on AI, it's best to read the transcript here of the meeting to form your own opinion on his exact tone and the content of his comments.
Pause Giant AI Experiments: An Open Letter
A group of over 11,605 industry leaders, including Elon Musk, and researchers have signed an open letter urging all AI labs to put a hold on training AI systems that are more powerful than GPT-4 for a period of six months. The letter was published by the Future of Life Institute, a non-profit organization based in Pennsylvania. According to the letter, AI systems have become so advanced that they are now competing with humans in general tasks, which poses a risk of flooding the media with false information and automating many jobs. Check out letter here.

OpenAI Releases Their Approach to AI Safety
Is it just a coincidence that the White House made comments about the risks of AI one day, and OpenAI released a document about their approach to AI safety the next day? 🤔
White House Message About Dangers of AI and Then OpenAI Blog Post
See short summary below and link to blog post for details.
OpenAI is committed to keeping powerful AI safe and broadly beneficial. We know our AI tools provide many benefits to people today. Our users around the world have told us that ChatGPT helps to increase their productivity, enhance their creativity, and offer tailored learning experiences. We also recognize that, like any technology, these tools come with real risks—so we work to ensure safety is built into our system at all levels.
Google Denies Bard Was Trained With ChatGPT Data
ShareGPT is a website that allows users to publish their ChatGPT conversations for others to view, which could potentially give competitors, like Google, access to information that could be used to build competing products. However, Google has stated that their AI model, Bard, isn't trained on data from either ChatGPT or ShareGPT. It's unclear exactly what this means, but it's possible that Google may have previously used ShareGPT and later stopped.

AI Could Could Impact 300 Million Full-time Jobs Worldwide
Goldman Sachs researchers recently conducted an analysis of occupational tasks in both the US and Europe. Based on their findings, they estimated that generative AI, if it lives up to its promised capabilities, could potentially automate 300 million full-time jobs globally. The report also noted that about two-thirds of current jobs are already exposed to some degree of AI automation. Generative AI, specifically, has the potential to substitute up to a quarter of current work. These findings shed light on the significant impact AI could have on the job market in the future.
