Let’s get right into it!

New York Times sues OpenAI and Microsoft

The New York Times initiated a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, marking a significant moment in copyright law as it pertains to AI technology. This legal action followed unsuccessful negotiations for a licensing agreement to address the companies' use of the Times' content in training their chatbots, like ChatGPT and BingChat. The Times' legal strategy differs from previous cases by focusing on direct evidence of verbatim copying rather than arguing that the AI output itself is an infringing work.

This approach might address the challenges faced by other plaintiffs, such as artists suing StabilityAI, who struggle to prove "substantial similarity" between AI outputs and original works. The Times emphasizes its significant role as a source of training data for AI models, underscoring the value of high-quality journalistic content in an era increasingly dominated by AI-generated information.

Accessing the newly released Midjourney version 6 requires users to manually activate the new version. This activation is not automatic; users must input specific commands in the Midjourney Discord server or send them directly to the Midjourney bot.

To enable Midjourney version 6, one needs to type the slash command "/settings" in the Discord server or in a direct message to the Midjourney bot. Following this, users should select V6 from the dropdown menu.

Alternatively, users can choose a more traditional method by manually typing “--v 6” after their image generation prompts. This new version promises enhanced features like more realistic imagery and improved text generation within images.

Jony Ive and Sam Altman AI hardware venture

Legendary designer Jony Ive, known for his iconic work at Apple, and Sam Altman are collaborating on a new artificial intelligence hardware project, enlisting former Apple executive Tang Tan to work at Ive's design firm, LoveFrom.

This project, one of Ive's most ambitious since leaving Apple in 2019, is in its early stages, focusing on hiring talent and conceptualizing products. Tan, who recently stepped down as Apple’s vice president of iPhone and watch product design, will lead hardware engineering for the AI devices. Altman, who briefly left but then returned as OpenAI's CEO, has been seeking funding for this venture, including a potential investment from SoftBank Group Corp. The project currently explores concept devices for home use.
