Fake AI Photo of a Pentagon Blast Went Viral

On May 22, 2023, a falsified photograph of an explosion near the Pentagon was widely circulated on social media, briefly affecting the US stock market. The photo, which was first posted on Facebook, was claimed to show a large plume of smoke near the US military headquarters in Virginia. The image was also shared by large Twitter accounts, including the Russian state-controlled news network RT and financial news site ZeroHedge. However, official sources soon refuted the photo, stating that there were no reported incidents at the Pentagon.

The image was suspected to have been generated by artificial intelligence, raising concerns about the potential for emerging technologies to accelerate the spread of misinformation. The account that first published the fake photo on Facebook had a "false information" label added to their original post, and access to the post was blocked.

AI Music Company Endel Partners With UMG

Universal Music Group (UMG), the world's largest record company, has partnered with Endel, an artificial intelligence music company, to help UMG artists create AI-assisted music. Endel specializes in "functional music" designed for passive listening experiences like sleeping, meditation, and white noise. The collaboration aims to transform artists' stems into perpetually-changing songs that align with listeners' desired feelings or vibes. UMG has expressed caution in embracing AI in the music industry, but sees potential in using AI to assist artists in the creative process. The partnership marks UMG's first venture of this kind. The companies have already started working on tracks with artists from Republic and Interscope Records, expected to be released in the coming months. The collaboration reflects the industry's emphasis on using AI to enhance and support artists rather than replacing them, aligning with the Human Artistry Campaign launched by music trade groups to ensure AI innovation respects law, rights, and human creativity.

AI Was Focus At Microsoft Build 2023

Microsoft Build is an annual conference organized by Microsoft that caters to software engineers and web developers who work with Windows, Microsoft Azure, and various other Microsoft technologies.

During Microsoft Build, two important concepts were copilots and plugins. A copilot is an application that utilizes advanced AI and large language models like GPT-4 to assist individuals with complex tasks. GitHub Copilot, introduced by Microsoft two years ago, is an example of a copilot that helps developers with code writing. Copilots are being extended to various areas within Microsoft's core businesses. They represent a new AI-powered software paradigm, fundamentally transforming how software is developed, including envisioning new product scenarios, user experience, architecture, service integration, and considerations of safety and security.

Plugins, on the other hand, are tools initially introduced for ChatGPT and more recently for Bing. They enhance the capabilities of AI systems by enabling interaction with APIs from other software and services. This allows real-time information retrieval, integration of business and company data, execution of new computations, and safe execution of actions on behalf of the user. Plugins act as the bridge connecting copilots with the wider digital world.

Generative Fill In Adobe Photoshop

Adobe has introduced AI tools in Photoshop that enable users to easily manipulate images using simple text prompts powered by Adobe Firefly generative AI. These AI models are trained on Adobe Stock imagery, openly licensed work, and public domain content, ensuring the generated content is suitable for commercial use and complies with copyright regulations. With this new feature, users can create, add, remove, or replace images in a seamless and efficient manner. See demo here.
