Apple study reveals major AI flaw in OpenAI and others

A study by Apple, published on arXiv, tested various language models, including those from OpenAI and Meta, to see how well they handle math problems. The study found that small changes in how questions are phrased or adding irrelevant details can cause the models to give very different answers, showing that they rely on pattern matching rather than true logical thinking. For example, a math question about collecting kiwis led to wrong answers when unnecessary details about the size of the kiwis were added.

Even minor changes, like swapping names, could change the results by around 10%. This inconsistency raises concerns about the use of these models for tasks that require accurate reasoning. Apple suggests that to improve AI’s decision-making, future models may need to combine neural networks with traditional, rule-based reasoning—known as neurosymbolic AI.

Adobe unveils AI video generator

Adobe is launching new AI-powered video tools that can extend footage, generate videos from text or images, and smooth out edits. These tools are available in Premiere Pro and the Firefly web app. However, they have limitations, such as short clip lengths and low quality. Adobe is also working on a turbo mode to speed up the generation process and has ensured that the tools are commercially safe.

Google to buy nuclear power for AI

Google and Kairos Power are making a historic deal to build the first ever commercial small modular reactors (SMRs) in the US. Google will buy the power generated by these 7 reactors (500 megawatts) to meet its growing demand for clean energy to power its data centers. This is a significant development for the nuclear industry as SMRs are seen as the future of nuclear power due to their lower costs and faster construction time.

SMR technology is not yet proven commercially and faces challenges from regulations and approvals. The details of the project location and how Google will receive the power are still unclear. However, this deal could pave the way for a revival of the US nuclear industry and wider adoption of SMRs.

OpenAI unveils secret meta prompt

OpenAI has released its meta-prompt for its new o1 model family, which provides developers with detailed instructions on how to improve their products' interactions with the growing ecosystem of OpenAI apps and sites. The meta-prompt guides the AI on everything from understanding the main objective of a task to structuring its output. OpenAI also released its system prompt, which is a model conditioner that dictates how the AI should behave throughout an interaction.

Both OpenAI and Anthropic have released their meta-prompts for their chatbots, ChatGPT and Claude. OpenAI's meta-prompt focuses on efficiency and accuracy, while Anthropic's meta-prompt focuses on human-like behavior and transparency.
