BUSINESS

AI’s $600B ROI question

In September 2023, a significant gap between the anticipated revenue from AI infrastructure and actual revenue growth was highlighted, termed a "$125B hole." Recently, Nvidia's ascent to the world's most valuable company has only widened this gap, turning the "$200B question" into a "$600B question." Factors such as the easing GPU supply shortage, growing GPU stockpiles, and OpenAI's dominant revenue share contribute to this issue.

Nvidia's upcoming B100 chip is expected to further boost demand, potentially complicating the situation. The AI infrastructure boom lacks the pricing power of physical infrastructure, leading to potential investment losses and rapid depreciation of older chips. While AI holds immense potential, the market must remain cautious of speculative investment frenzies and focus on long-term value creation for users.

AI SECURITY

Blocking AI scrapers and crawlers

Cloudflare has launched an easy one-click feature to block all AI bots, available to all users, including those on the free tier. The popularity of generative AI has increased the demand for training content, leading to issues with unauthorized scraping by AI bots. Incidents like Google's $60 million annual payment to license Reddit content and allegations of OpenAI using Scarlett Johansson's voice without consent highlight these concerns.

Although Cloudflare previously allowed users to block well-behaved AI bots, the new feature extends this capability to all AI bots. Users can enable this protection by toggling the "AI Scrapers and Crawlers" switch in the Security section of the Cloudflare dashboard. The feature will be dynamically updated to counter new bot activities, ensuring ongoing protection for website content.

STARTUPS

Stability AI community license

Stability AI, the startup behind Stable Diffusion, has updated its licensing agreement to expand the free tier and remove limits on the number of generated images. The new "Stability AI Community License" allows free use of their generative AI models for non-commercial purposes, with commercial applications requiring payment only for enterprises making over $1 million annually.

The license also extends to small businesses with revenue under $1 million. Additionally, Stability AI announced improvements to its SD3M model, addressing user feedback and promising further enhancements. The model has been renamed AuraDiffusion, and updates are expected in the coming weeks.

BIG TECH

Siri AI launch delay

Siri will significantly improve in spring 2025 with the release of Apple's Apple Intelligence AI system in the iOS 18.4 update. Apple has been vague about the timeline, only promising the flagship AI features next year. These updates will roll out in stages, so while Siri might soon help with tasks like retrieving specific photos or filling out forms, other features like AI-powered emoji generation may take longer.

Expected features this fall include ChatGPT integration, a new Siri interface, and enhanced tech support capabilities. Additionally, future AI plans might involve AirPods with embedded cameras for advanced navigation and gesture detection, potentially two generations away.
