Can AI turn every employee into a developer?

“Developers, developers, developers!” was the cry from Steve Ballmer many years ago as Microsoft was taking over the planet. Microsoft is channeling its efforts to morph everyone into coders with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI), resonating with Steve Ballmer's historic emphasis on developers. During its recent Power Platform conference, the spotlight was on tools that enable citizen developers to design mobile applications.

GitHub CEO, Thomas Dohmke, underscored the advantage of AI tools like Copilot in facilitating code creation, making the process more accessible compared to his initial coding journey that required books, magazines, and computer clubs. The narrative further unfolds into broader implications of AI in software development, evidenced by platforms like GitHub's Copilot, and how companies like Replit, Sourcegraph, and Nomad Data are also exploring generative AI software development.

Walmart AI

Walmart is integrating generative AI technology to help shoppers. Upcoming features include a shopping assistant for interactive, personalized shopping experiences, and a generative AI-empowered search for contextual understanding of user queries, improving product discovery based on specific themes or needs.

The retailer is also diving into interior design assistance, merging generative AI with AR technology. Customers can upload room photos, with AI suggesting decor alterations, allowing for user feedback on preferences and budget considerations.

Read The Information first…or them later

The Information’s journalists get the news that other newsrooms envy. That’s why their reporting on tech, media and finance has been followed by the New York Times, Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal and dozens of other outlets more than 400 times in the last year.

Canva’s new AI tools

Web-based design platform Canva has launched Magic Studio, a new suite of AI-driven design tools aimed at simplifying content creation for individuals and organizations, irrespective of their design expertise. Magic Studio comes with a text-to-video feature in its Magic Media tool, powered by Runway AI, allowing generation of short videos from text prompts or existing images.

Other tools like Magic Grab and Magic Expand aid in image editing by auto-selecting and separating subjects, and expanding images beyond frames respectively. Parallel to this, Canva is also launching Canva Shield to ensure the safe use of its AI tools and to control inappropriate content creation.

Microsoft AI + Domino’s Pizza

Domino’s Pizza Inc., the world’s leading pizza company, and Microsoft have formed a partnership to revolutionize pizza ordering and store operations through generative AI technology. Utilizing Microsoft’s cloud and Azure OpenAI Service, they aim to enhance Domino's customer experience by personalizing and simplifying the ordering process.

The collaboration has propelled Domino’s into early stages of developing a generative AI assistant, driven by Azure OpenAI, to assist store managers in daily tasks like inventory management and staff scheduling. This AI assistant is envisioned to streamline pizza preparation, quality control, and enable store managers to focus more on customer service and team member experience.
